A sketch is a swift and usually irregular drawing that gives the guiding outlines or prominent features without the fine and elaborate detail. It is intended to serve as the basis of a more finished picture, or to be used in its composition.

In essence, in his rough drawing sketch or painting sketch, the artist carefully notes down his preliminary ideas for the envisioned work which will eventually be realized with greater precision, skill and detail.
