Impasto

Impasto is a technique used in painting where paint is either mixed right on the canvas or laid in multiple layers on an area until it builds up and becomes very thick to the extent that the brush or palette-knife strokes are visible. Upon drying, the resultant effect, termed ‘impasto’ provides variegated levels of texture as the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas and falling off the picture plane.
