Genre

Genre is a term for used for paintings or other works of art characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. Genres may be applied to appropriate art of any place or period. In a broader sense, the term is used to mean a particular branch or category of art. Essentially, there are five genres of painting, namely;


1: Quotidian paintings; basic scenes of everyday life

2: Portrait paintings; which include individual, group or self-portraits

3: Landscape paintings; works whose principal content is a scenic view
4: Still Life paintings; an arrangement of domestic objects or diurnal items
5: History paintings; or religious, historical and allegorical work with a moral message
