Foreground

Foreground is the area of the picture space nearest to the viewer and immediately behind the picture plane. An understanding of perspective developed in the early 15th century allowed painters to divide space behind the picture plane into foreground, middle-ground and background. In essence, the element of the picture closest to the viewer makes up the foreground, the furthest element away from the viewer is the background, and the middle ground makes up the area in between.
