Action painting is a type of instinctual, highly dynamic and impulsive painting in which the artist applies paint with energetic gestural movements, sometimes by spontaneous application of very vigorous, sweeping brushstrokes or by dribbling, splashing and spilling paint onto the canvas.

In essence, action painting is executed with no preconceived idea of what the final composition will look like.
