ARTWORK THEORY REPORT
The dominating shades of red – from deep scarlet, deep cadmium, crimson to burgundy, and vermillion were applied onto the composition repeatedly over a period of 96 hours under a 500+watt bulb. Heavily thinned linseed oil was mixed with cadmium, burnt sienna and quinacridone rust to create the antique and earthy tones. Aged foam board mixed with contact cement before being scoured and sanded was primarily used as the ground upon which the pebbles, sand and gypsum creating the relief was applied. The architectural line markings, including the multi sized squares and occasional rectangles were formed using a surgical blade before applying color and after curing the work. Incisions marking the grid in the picture plane as well as the letters comprising the words were only applied and stenciled onto the canvas progressively after the work was completed.
CONDITION OF ARTWORK
Original condition. The brilliantly resplendent crimson, burgundy vermillion and rustic parts (enamel like) on the canvas are intentional and were created using the artist signature toothbrushing technique that hides every brush mark. The artist signature is rendered in gold at the bottom left corner of the canvas.
